Assignment 1

The date of our discussion was Wednesday 11th September 2013

In our group there was four people, me,
Rhys Chambers,
Declan Corcoran and
Emma Sidwell

I talked about some of the skills needed in public services such as being able to follow instructions, having good social skills and being able to work well in a team. I mentioned why you need to be focused while with little sleep as on a night shift this will be very important. I also spoke about the certain tests you need to be in the fire service for example fitness tests, lung capacity tests and also eye tests to make sure your eye sight is good enough for the fire service. This can be validated by the people in my group.

Everyone in our group made a good contribution to the discussion and spoke about a lot of different skills you need to succeed in public services.

Emma - Emma spoke about the police force using information from police force UK and the Metropolitan police website. She mentioned a lot of skills such as confidence, being calm, can follow instructions well and can handle people well.

Declan - Declan mentioned that you have to be focused, alert, confident, know what your doing and being able to follow instructions.

Rhys - Rhys talked about the police service saying you need to be good at listening to commands, know what your doing and have good fitness levels to be a police officer.

Devices like laptops are good for sending pictures because you can send them through e-mails all around the world but they have many costs. Dongles are useful because you just plug it in to a laptop and it gives you wireless internet. They can cost up to £15 or more for internet usage for a month but it depends how long you are on the internet for. The longer you are on the internet for the more it costs. It can be hard to send pictures via dongle on a laptop because the dongle can lose signal very easily therefore it can be very slow but once you get a signal it is easy and fast to send pictures.

SMS messages can cost up to 20p or more to send 1 picture message to another mobile device. It can cost more when you are sending it to different countries though. Picture messages can be very slow to send and sometimes they fail to send.

To keep your device and protocols safe you can put a password on your device and you can also put a password on the Wi-Fi that you are connected to, no one else can get into the Wi-Fi unless they know the password. Without a password people can hack your device and they can put viruses or even get into personal information/documents therefore the password you set should be hard to guess and you must be able to remember it. Another way is to change your password often just in case someone knows your password. Encryption is a security that protects your data. To access an encrypted file you must use a private key or password.

Mobile technologies have a huge impact on social life because people would rather text or phone each other than speak to each other face to face. SMS is very useful though because you can contact people you haven't spoke to in a while e.g family and friends. Being on your phone can cause eye strain though if you have been on it for long and that can cause problems with your eye sight. Some phones have internet access also so you can have Facebook and put photos from your phone on to there and you can contact other people through inbox. The big problem with phones is illegally downloading music and other things that would usually cost money. Many companies lose out on a lot of money through people downloading things for free.

Using phones whilst driving is a huge problem. Many people have crashed and been injured really bad whilst driving because they get distracted by the other person talking on the phone and if you get caught on camera you may lose your licence and possibly get a fine.

The problems were that your eyes strain easy if you are using your phone for long. To prevent straining your eyes by using your phone you can take regular breaks and you can attach a screen filter onto your phone or computer. You can also adjust the brightness of the technology you're using, the brighter the screen is the more your eyes strain.

There are a lot of mechanisms put in place. WiFi is protected by having a their own individual password. To avoid hacking you should change the password regularly or put a password that no one would think of guessing. By doing scans regularly on your phone or computer it will find out if you have been hacked or if your technology is still safe. In office's and call centers at work there are health and safety rules and before working in one of them places the workers are trained to have regular breaks so their eyes don't strain from using the computers for long and they also have wrist pads so their hands don't get hurt from typing for ages.To stop people from going on their phones whilst they're driving there are hands free handsets made that you clip on to your ear and whenever you get a call from someone you speak to them through that.

An easy way of sending a contacts number to another phone is through text. Click onto the contact number, highlight it and it should give you options saying something like copy, edit. Click copy then go on to SMS and paste the number into the text then send it. That is the easiest way. More ways is to click onto the contact and it should say send contact card the options given could be Email, PIN, Text Message. By using Email you will need a Email Address and you can then attach the contact into a file then put the file into a message then send it to the person you want to send it to. Using Email is the hardest out of all of the protocols. It is very complicated and the other person may not know how to receive and open up the contact card. I think copy and pasting the contact through text message is the best way because its not complicated and quick so you can get it done quicker.

You can buy an iPhone for around £200-£500 and you can buy apps such as Satnavs and mobile phone trackers, so the boss can track the worker to make sure he is where he should be and not doing something off task. You could use excel to make timetables to say what time they have to be there at. you could also ring workers if they are late on a delivery. this would make the business more efficient and quicker, therefore the delivery would most of the time be delivered on time.
