Without a password people can hack your device and they can put viruses or even get into personal information/documents therefore the password you set should be hard to guess and you must be able to remember it. Another way is to change your password often just in case someone knows your password. Encryption is a security that protects your data. To access an encrypted file you must use a private key or password.
